Colors of Vaseline Glass (Colors of Unanium Glass)
This home page describes "How to discriminate vaseline glass (uranium
glass)" , and "What is genuine vaseline glass and what is not?"
This is a basic requirement of all vaseline/uranium glass collectors.
Here, the members of JUGCC (Japan Uranium Glass Collectors Club) have contributed
to describe this article. The uranium glass is described by its color.
It is said that the name of "Vaseline glass" came from the fact
that the original color of vaseline petroleum jelly (salve) was a strange
yellow-green. Then, the nickname became a "Vaseline glass" for
these clear yellow or yellow-green glass, sometime in 1930s. Pure collctors
in USA define "vaseline glass" only for these clear yellow or
yellow-green glass.So, we follow them. |
0) Fluorescence
When the uranium atom absorbs the energy of the ultraviolet(UV) rays, it is activated by the UV energy. The atom instantly releases its activated energy as visible light of green color. This green light wavelength (550 nano-meter) is unique to the uranium atom. And its green color can not be changed by anyhow, even if mixing with other color glass. In other words; The fluorescence of vaseline glass is always green. Either red/orange fluorescence
or blue/greenish-blue fluorescence means NOT vaseline (or uranium) glass.
A portable ultraviolet rays lamp is so called a "BLACK LIGHT",
and you can buy in a large electric appliances store. (Although the radiation
from uranium atom in vaseline glasses is negligibly small, UV light is
harm to your eyes. Do not look UV light closely for long time.)
1) Yellow vaseline glass
Most produced color of the vaseline glass is transparent yellow. It is the transparent glass which you can see through, and its color is mainly yellow but slightly greenish. If the glass is a cut glass (where its edge is ground by the grinding machine), and when it is under sun light or ultra-violet light, the characteristic green fluorescence comes out from the sharp edge portion, But, most yellow vaseline glass is a pressed glass. In that case, it is difficult to discriminate under sun light, because its edge is round. You have to check it using UV lamp.

Another typical yellow vaseline glass
Right-hand photo shows white color at the top, due to heat treatment.
(Product by Davidson in England.) |

2) Green uranium glass
Produced mass of green uranium glass is maybe 1/10 compared with yellow
vaseline glass. This green color also comes from small amount of either
copper compound or chromium, and not limited to uranium. Therefore, it
is impossible to discriminate under sun-light. But, most of the Bohemian
or English product of green uranium glass is a cut-glass, and the green fluorescence comes out from the edge of the glass. That means green is stronger in the edge than other part. But, I recommend to use black light to determine if its is real uranium glass. |

Green in the sun light, and glows bluish-green under UV.
This is NOT uranium glass, but maybe, potash (potassium) glass. This glass
is radio-active, due to the potassium-40 (K-40) activity. K-40 is radio-active
having 12 billion half year, and included 0.01% of natural potassium. If
I assume 10% of potassium is include in the glass, K-40 becomes 10PPM (10gram
in 1 ton ). Then, the radio-activity becomes almost 1/100 of uranium glass. |

3)Blue glass
Blue in the sun light, and glows bluish-green under UV.
This is NOT uranium glass. You may see many items which say "Blue vaseline" in the auctions. So, please be careful when you buy them. Most of the clear blue glass are NOT uranium glass. Manganese shows either green or orange fluorescence under UV light.
(In the bottom picture under UV, you will see green glass in the back.
It is real vaseline in order to compare the bluish-green one in front.)
(I bought these items at one-dollar shop in Japan) |

Greenish blue uranium glass.(left photo)
This glass is mostly blue, and slightly green.
This glows green under UV as seen in the right photo, and radio-active.
So, this is genuine uranium glass.
(Product of MOSSER Glass Inc of USA.) |

4)Opaque light blue uranium glass
This glass is non-transparent, and pale-blue color under sun light.
It glows green under UV, and genuine uranium glass.
|
|
5)Orange (or amber) glass
The center brooch has an orange color under sun light, and glows orange
under UV. This orange fluorescence is said that it comes from cadmium sulfate
in a glass. But, manganese also shows either green or orange fluorescence
under UV light. Anyway, this is NOT vaseline glass, (JUDY LEE in USA).
Peripheral necklace has light amber color under sun light, and glows orange
under UV. This is NOT vaseline glass.
The fluorescence of vaseline (uranium) glass is always green. Either red/orange fluorescence or blue/greenish-blue fluorescence means
NOT vaseline glass..

6) Opaque pink uranium glass (Burmese glass)
Left hand cat looks pink with slightly green under sun light. This is called
Burmese glass, because its color reminds the sunset of Burma country. This
is genuine uranium glass. (FENTON in USA)
Right hand cat looks same as left one. But, it is a contemporary FENTON's
product, which does NOT glow under UV (that means it does NOT contain uranium).
So, the right hand one is NOT a uranium glass. |

|
7)Transparent pink glass
This is pink under sun light, and glows bluish green under UV. This is NOT uranium glass.
|
|
8)Amber uranium glass
Amber or brown color under sun light, and it glows green under UV.
WEBB product in England. |
|
9)Custard uranium glass
So called Custard glass. Milky white like a bone china under sun-light. It glows green under UV, and real uranium glass.
|
|
10)Alabaster uranium glass
Opaque white-green under sun light. It glows green under UV, and real uranium
glass.
(product of Bohemian?).
|
|
11)Violet glass
Violet color under sun light (top), and glows bluish green (bottom) under
UV.
This is NOT uranium glass.
(FENTON product in USA) |
|
12)Unknown
Some glasses may contain uranium, but they do not glow under UV due to
the interaction of the metal component in the glass.
I have not seen this, but I am afraid it will be very difficult to find
them. |

13)Porcelain
This is not a glass but a porcelain. And its surface is colored orange
by high content of uranium.
It does not glow under UV, but it radiates gamma rays.
(German or Bohemian product)

|
14) Luminesence glass
This is not a uranium glass. But it glows same green under UV light.(Wave
length is 550nm, and identical to real uranium glass.)
Also, it glows for several minutes after UV irradiation.
This is recent invention at certain Japanese company.

Out of No.) Inviting cat
Green crystal glasses on the cat glow green under UV, and it contains uranium.
This cat is called "Inviting cat", and typical Japanese product.
(So, made in Japan?)
