Uranium glass in Vacuum tube
One unique application of Vaseline glass
(Uranium glass) is the vacuum tube.
The Museum in the University of Electricity and Communication(in Tokyo) owns more than 10,000 vacuum tubes from
1910 to the current age.
I visited here in 2009, and I and the curators
found more than 10 vacuum tubes which use
uranium glass.

The following are the vacuum tubes using
uranium glass.

The following 2 tubes are mine.
Left small one is 3C24, and marked as JAN-3C24/VT-204, Made in USA Phillips.
Right large one (21cm length) is 5C22, and marked as JAN-CADK-5C22/HT-415, made in USA/ Kuthe
Laboratories.Top 5cm is uranium glass. This was used as
military Radar in the World War II.

3C24 and 5C22 |
Before World War II, uranium glass was used
in experimental glass works, because uranium
glass has medium thermal expansion rate between
metal and glass.
The CORNING GLASS Works in USA was selling this special glass for
this purpose.
Right photo is its example (8mm diameter,
100mm length).
Borosilicate Uranium Glass Tube:
This is Hard Glass with a coefficient of
thermal expansion 40X10E-7 cm/cm/C and would
be compatible with Pyrex etc.(2010/11) |

I searched the Internet, and found the following

Vaseline glass (Uranium glass) have been
mostly used at homes. The only scientific/industrial
use is this vacuum tubes and train/car head-lights(click here).
